llms.txt skill

The GEO playbook Okara’s GEO Agent uses to publish and maintain an llms.txt file — the machine-readable index that tells AI crawlers and assistants which of your pages matter and what they mean.

# llms.txt

A curated, machine-readable index at the root of your site that tells AI crawlers and assistants which pages matter and what they mean — so your best content is the content models read, trust, and cite.

About this skill

What is the llms.txt?

The llms.txt skill is Okara’s Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) methodology for creating and maintaining an llms.txt file: a curated, machine-readable index at the root of your site that points AI crawlers and assistants at your most important, canonical content — instead of leaving them to guess through navigation, scripts, and boilerplate.

It’s written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Read it to understand how to inventory, prioritize, describe, and structure your key pages into a file models can parse, adapt it for your own team, or let the GEO Agent generate and maintain it against your live site.

Downloading the playbook is free with an Okara account. Generating your llms.txt, keeping it in sync as your content changes, and pairing it with the rest of your AI-visibility work is part of the GEO Agent.

Example

See it in action

You ask: AI assistants keep summarizing our site from random old blog posts instead of our actual docs and product pages. Can an llms.txt fix that?

Agent does: Your site has 210 crawlable URLs but only about 30 answer real buyer questions — the rest is tag archives, thin posts, and duplicates. I built an llms.txt at your domain root: an H1 with your brand, a one-line summary, and grouped sections for Docs, Guides, Product, and Pricing, each link described in plain language and pointing at the canonical URL. Low-value pages are excluded, and I’ll re-generate it whenever pages are added or moved so the index never drifts.

How it works

From input to fix list

  1. 1

    You provide your site

Paste your domain or sitemap and flag the content you most want AI systems to use.

  2. 2

    Okara maps your key content

The GEO Agent crawls your pages and separates high-signal, canonical content from thin or duplicate URLs.

  3. 3

    It generates a structured llms.txt

Prioritized links are grouped into clear sections with a plain-language description for each, ready to serve at your domain root.

  4. 4

It keeps the file in sync

As pages are added, moved, or retired, the agent re-generates the file so your AI-facing index never goes stale.

What's included

Everything it checks

  • llms.txt generation

Produces a complete, spec-aligned llms.txt (and optional llms-full.txt) ready to serve at your root.

  • Content prioritization

Selects the pages that answer real questions and drops thin, duplicate, or low-value URLs.

  • Canonical, clean links

Uses absolute canonical URLs that resolve directly — no redirects, no login walls.

  • Crawler discoverability

Places and structures the file so AI crawlers and assistants can find and parse it reliably.

  • Plain-language descriptions

Writes a one-line description per link so models understand intent, not just the title.

  • Ongoing maintenance

Re-generates the file on a schedule so it stays accurate as your content changes.

Use cases

When to reach for it

  • Point AI assistants at your real docs and product pages instead of stray old posts.
  • Give AI crawlers a clean, canonical map of your most important content.
  • Stop thin, duplicate, or archive URLs from diluting how models read your site.
  • Publish a stable, machine-readable content index that stays current over time.
  • Pair your llms.txt with broader GEO work to grow how often you’re cited.
