AI writing and SEO tools now cover a lot of what a smaller retainer buys. That doesn't make agencies obsolete, but founders at $0 to $1M ARR should compare cost and output before signing one.

Jasper drafts on-brand content in its Canvas workspace using saved brand voices and marketing agents. Surfer scores drafts against the pages currently ranking for a keyword and suggests structure, terms and length. Together they help an in-house writer produce SEO articles faster than an agency turnaround.
Jasper Pro is $69/month, or $59/month billed yearly, for one seat. Surfer's Discovery plan is $49/month billed yearly for 120 documents; Standard is $119/month ($99 yearly) and adds AI visibility tracking for 25 prompts, refreshed weekly. Neither tool handles distribution or social publishing.

In healthcare, cybersecurity, legal and technical B2B, accuracy and credibility matter more than volume. A specialist agency or an experienced freelance writer who knows the field will usually produce better work there than a generalist agency or an AI tool.
