How to Rank in Google AI Mode: A Practical Guide for 2026

What Google officially says about appearing in AI Mode, how it differs from AI Overviews, and the practical steps and measurement that improve your chances of being linked.

Your pages can rank well in Google and still be missing from the answers people read in AI Mode. That matters more every month. Google said in May 2026 that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users a year after launch, and in August it started expanding some AI Overviews so they flow straight into an AI Mode conversation.

There is no "position one" in a conversation, so the usual ranking playbook needs adjusting. This guide covers what AI Mode is, how it differs from AI Overviews, what Google's own documentation says about appearing in it, the practical steps that improve your odds, and how to measure the result without guessing.

We label each recommendation as confirmed by Google or as an observation and best practice, because a lot of AI search advice online mixes the two.

Quick answer: Google says there are no special requirements for AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the normal SEO fundamentals apply. To be linked more often, make pages easy to crawl, answer each question in the first sentence or two under a clear heading, cover the follow-up questions a conversation leads to, keep facts current and visible in text, make your brand easy to identify, and earn mentions on sites Google already cites for your topic. Measure it with Search Console's generative AI report (impressions only) and a monthly manual check of your key prompts.

What Google AI Mode is

AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience. You ask a question with text, voice, an image or a file, and get an AI-written answer with links to the web. You can keep asking follow-up questions in the same thread.

The part that matters for SEO is how it finds sources. Google's AI Mode help page says it "divides your question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously." Google calls this query fan-out. One question like "best CRM for a five-person agency" can become separate searches for pricing, integrations, agency features and comparisons, and the links in the answer can come from any of them.

You reach AI Mode from google.com/ai, from the AI Mode tab on a results page, or from the Google app. Google's help center lists it as available in more than 200 countries and territories and dozens of languages, including English and Hindi.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews

They look similar and share infrastructure, but they behave differently. Google's AI features documentation says the two "may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary."

The line between them is blurring. In August 2026 Google confirmed that for some queries, AI Overviews now expand dynamically with the "Ask anything" box already open, which pushes people into an AI Mode style conversation.

Observation: third-party studies show the two features often cite different pages. Search Engine Journal's summary of Ahrefs research notes that AI Mode leaned more heavily on Wikipedia and Quora, while YouTube was the most cited source in AI Overviews. So being in an AI Overview for a query doesn't mean you'll be linked in AI Mode for the same question. If you're working on AI Overviews specifically, see our guide to showing up in AI Overviews.

What Google officially says

Google's Search Central page on AI features is short and worth reading in full. The key points:

  • Eligibility (confirmed): "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet." Google adds: "There are no additional technical requirements."
  • Optimization (confirmed): "Specific optimization isn't required for AI Overviews and AI Mode," but SEO fundamentals still apply. Google's list: allow crawling in robots.txt and at your CDN or host, link to important content internally, provide a good page experience, keep important content in text, support text with good images and video, make structured data match visible text, and keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information current.
  • Controls (confirmed): nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what appears. Google-Extended does not control Search features. Since August 31, 2026, Search Console also has a Search generative AI control under Settings that lets you exclude your site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover. The default is to include.

Google's John Mueller put it plainly in August 2026: "from our POV there's nothing really special you need to do for generative AI responses in search" (Search Engine Roundtable).

That doesn't mean nothing helps. It means there's no secret AI Mode switch. The steps below are the fundamentals that matter most when answers are assembled from many fan-out searches.

How to rank in Google AI Mode: 7 practical steps

1. Confirm you are eligible (confirmed by Google)

Run these checks on the pages you most want linked:

  • Indexed: use URL Inspection in Search Console. If the page isn't indexed, nothing else matters.
  • Snippet allowed: no nosnippet and no max-snippet:0 on the page or in HTTP headers.
  • Crawlable: robots.txt allows Googlebot, and your CDN or firewall isn't blocking it. Aggressive bot protection can block Googlebot without anyone noticing.
  • Text is in the HTML: key facts aren't locked in images, PDFs only, or content that loads after an interaction.
  • Search generative AI control: open Settings in Search Console and confirm the property (and any parent property) is set to include.

2. Write answer-first sections (best practice)

Fan-out means your page is judged against sub-questions, not only the main query. A section that answers its sub-question in the first sentence is easier to use as a source than one that warms up for three paragraphs.

Compare two openings under the heading "How much does X cost?":

Weak: Pricing is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer
depends on several factors that we'll walk through below.

Strong: X costs $49 per month for up to 3 users, or $470 per year.
Teams over 10 users need the Business plan, which is quoted.

Write for readers, not for a template. Google's Danny Sullivan has said Google doesn't want people turning content into bite-sized chunks for LLMs. Clear headings, direct first sentences and complete explanations serve readers and AI features alike.

3. Cover the follow-up questions (best practice)

AI Mode is a conversation, and Search Console counts each follow-up as a new query. Pages that answer the natural next question stay useful as the conversation goes on.

Map the conversation for your most valuable topic before you write:

Main question: best project management tool for a small agency
Likely follow-ups:
- Which ones have client portals?
- How much do they cost for 8 users?
- Does it integrate with Slack and Google Drive?
- [Tool A] vs [Tool B] for agencies
- How hard is it to migrate from spreadsheets?

Good sources for follow-ups: People Also Ask boxes, your sales and support calls, and long, conversational queries in your Search Console performance report. Cover the important ones on the page itself or on well-linked supporting pages.

4. Use structured data accurately, not as a trick (confirmed plus study)

Google's only structured data rule for AI features is that it must match the visible text. There's no special AI Mode schema.

Observation: an Ahrefs study reported by Search Engine Roundtable tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD between August 2025 and March 2026 against 4,000 control pages. It found no meaningful citation uplift in AI Overviews, AI Mode or ChatGPT.

So use schema for what it's for: rich results and clearly stating facts about your organization, products and articles. Our schema markup generator builds valid JSON-LD for the common types. Just don't expect it to get you into AI Mode on its own.

5. Make your brand easy to identify (best practice)

When AI Mode compares options, it needs to know what you are. Keep your name, category, pricing and core facts consistent everywhere:

  • An About page that says what you do, who it's for and where you're based.
  • Organization markup with your logo and official profiles.
  • Product and pricing pages with the facts in plain text.
  • The same description on your Business Profile, Merchant Center, app store listings and major directories.

Contradictions (an old price on one page, a different plan name on another) give the model reasons to pick a competitor's clearer page.

6. Keep pages current, honestly (best practice)

For comparisons, prices, software features and anything with a year in the query, stale facts lose. Review your top pages every quarter, update what changed, and show an "Updated" date only when the content actually changed. Changing the date without changing the page doesn't make it fresher.

7. Earn mentions on sites AI Mode already cites (observation)

Your own site is only part of the picture. For category and comparison questions, AI Mode often links to forums, review sites, video and reference pages.

Observation: an Ahrefs analysis of 863,000 keywords, covered by Search Engine Journal in March 2026, found only 38% of AI Overview citations also ranked in the top 10 for the same query. That study covers AI Overviews, not AI Mode, but the lesson carries over: ranking helps, and fan-out pulls sources from well beyond the first page.

A practical approach:

  1. Run your 10 to 20 most valuable questions in AI Mode.
  2. Note every domain it links to, not only competitors.
  3. Group them: forums (Reddit, Quora), video (YouTube), review sites, publications, reference sites.
  4. Earn a genuine presence where it fits: helpful answers in communities, a clear YouTube explainer, complete review profiles, original data a publication would cite.

The ideas in our generative engine optimization guide apply here, especially publishing original information worth citing.

How to measure AI Mode visibility

Google gives you more AI search data in 2026 than it used to, but not everything you'd want.

SourceWhat it showsWhat it doesn't show
Search Console Performance report (Web)Clicks, impressions and position from AI Mode, mixed in with regular searchA filter to separate AI Mode
Search Console generative AI reportImpressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and dateClicks, queries, or AI Mode separately from AI Overviews
Manual prompt checksWhether you're linked, who else is, which sources are citedScale, and results vary by user and location

A few details from Google's Performance report documentation that help you read the data:

  • A click on an external link in AI Mode counts as a click.
  • Position in AI Mode follows the same method as a normal results page.
  • A follow-up question is a new query. This is why some sites now see odd queries such as "yes, pricing" in their reports (Search Engine Roundtable).

The generative AI performance report rolled out to all sites on August 31, 2026. You'll find it under Performance if your site has enough impressions. Use it to see which pages AI features use and whether that's going up. For diagnosing traffic drops, see how to recover traffic lost to AI Overviews.

For manual checks, keep a simple sheet and repeat it monthly:

PromptDateLinked?Which pageCompetitors linkedOther sources cited
best CRM for small agencies2026-10-01NoHubSpot, PipedriveReddit, G2
[your brand] vs [competitor]2026-10-01Yes/compare/competitorCompetitorYouTube

Results vary by location, history and time, so look at trends across many prompts, not single answers.

Where Okara fits

If you want AI search tracking without running the spreadsheet by hand, Okara's GEO Agent tracks up to 15 AI search prompts and reports your brand mentions, citations and competitor visibility, with recommendations on what to change. Its product page lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini as the engines it covers, so for Google AI Mode specifically you'll still rely on Search Console and manual checks. The SEO Agent flags technical and content fixes, and the Coding Agent can ship them as GitHub pull requests you review.

All three come with AI CMO Lite at $129/month, or $108/month billed annually (pricing). No tool can guarantee Google will link to you. What it can do is cut down the tracking and the backlog of fixes.

Common questions

Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews appear on the normal results page only when Google thinks they help. AI Mode is a separate conversational experience with follow-ups. They may use different models and often link to different pages.

Do I need special schema or markup for AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no additional technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Structured data should match your visible content, and one large study found adding schema didn't meaningfully change AI citations.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Partly. AI Mode clicks and impressions are included in the Performance report under Web, but you can't filter them out. The generative AI report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode combined, without clicks or queries.

Yes. The Search generative AI control in Search Console settings excludes your site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI in Discover without removing it from regular results. For a single page or section, nosnippet or data-nosnippet also works, but it removes that text from regular snippets too.

Do I need to rank in the top 10 to appear in AI Mode?

It helps, but it isn't required. Because AI Mode runs several related searches for one question, pages that rank for the sub-questions can be linked even if they don't rank for the main query.

How long does it take to show up in AI Mode?

There's no fixed timeline. Changes to a page need to be recrawled and reprocessed, which can take days to weeks. Mentions on other sites take longer to build. Track monthly and judge the trend over a quarter.
