How to Summarize Reddit Threads With AI (Without Missing the Best Comments)
Four ways to summarize Reddit posts and long threads with AI, prompts for summaries, sentiment and customer research, and how to check that the summary is accurate.
A Reddit thread with 400 comments often holds the best answer you'll find anywhere on a topic. It's also buried under jokes, side arguments and "more replies" links. AI can summarize a thread in seconds, but only if it actually sees the comments that matter.
This guide covers four ways to summarize Reddit posts and threads with AI, prompts that produce useful output, and how to check the summary is accurate.
Quick answer: For one thread, expand the comments, copy the page text, and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with a structured prompt. For "what does Reddit think about X" across many threads, use Reddit's built-in AI search (the Ask button). Pasting a link into an AI assistant sometimes works, but check that it quotes real comments. For ongoing monitoring across subreddits, use an agent that brings new threads to you.
Method 1: Copy and paste the thread (most reliable)
It's low-tech, but it's the one method where you control exactly what the AI sees.
- Open the thread on desktop.
- Pick a sort order that matches your goal. Use Top for consensus, Controversial for disagreements, and New for recent experiences, which matters when a product has changed recently.
- Expand collapsed comments. Click "more replies" and "continue this thread" on the branches you care about. Anything collapsed won't be copied.
- Select the page text and copy it.
- Paste it into your AI assistant with a prompt. Templates are below.
For very long threads, paste in two or three parts, ask for a summary of each, then ask the AI to combine them. Very long pastes can lose detail from the middle.
Method 2: Paste the link into an AI assistant
ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude can open some web pages. When it works, you can paste the Reddit URL and ask for a summary. It doesn't always work, though. Reddit restricts automated access, so an assistant may see only the original post, part of the comments, or nothing at all.
The test: ask it to include three direct quotes with the commenters' usernames. If it can't, or the quotes don't exist in the thread, go back to Method 1.
Method 3: Use Reddit's AI search for a topic, not a thread
If your question is bigger than one thread, such as "what do people think of [product]?" or "what's the best budget CRM?", type it into Reddit's search bar and select Ask. Reddit's AI search (formerly Reddit Answers, merged into search in May 2026) writes a summary from many posts and comments and links to the threads it used.
It's a fast starting point. It does tend to lean on already-popular comments, so open the linked threads and read some newer ones too.
Method 4: Browser extensions
Summarizer extensions read the page you have open and produce a summary in a sidebar. They're convenient, but they share the copy-paste limitation: collapsed comments are invisible to them. Expand what matters first.
Prompts that produce useful summaries
A generic "summarize this" gets a generic paragraph. Ask for structure.
General summary
Summarize this Reddit thread.
1. The original question or claim in one sentence.
2. The main answers or positions, with how much support each got (upvotes or number of people agreeing).
3. Points of disagreement.
4. Specific recommendations, tools, numbers or steps mentioned.
5. Three direct quotes that capture the discussion, with usernames.
Only use information from the thread. If something is unclear, say so.
Customer research
From this thread, list:
- The problems people describe, in their own words
- What they have tried and why it did not work
- Products mentioned, with what people like and dislike about each
- Any prices or budgets mentioned
- Exact phrases I could use in marketing copy
Sentiment
What is the overall sentiment toward [product] in this thread? Give a split (positive, negative, mixed) with two example comments for each, and the main reasons behind each view.
Objections
List every objection, doubt or complaint about [product or category] raised in this thread, grouped by theme, with how often each one appears.
Disagreement map
Where do commenters disagree? For each disagreement, summarize the best argument on each side and which side seems to have more support.
How to check an AI summary of Reddit
- Ask for quotes and spot-check two. If a quote doesn't exist, don't trust the rest.
- Watch for upvote blindness. In pasted text, the AI may give a 2-upvote comment the same weight as a 900-upvote one. Ask it to note support levels, or copy the thread with Top sort.
- Check dates. Advice from a few years ago may be wrong today. Ask the AI to flag comments that mention dates or versions.
- Don't generalize from one thread. One thread is a handful of opinions. Look at several before changing your roadmap or messaging.
