Reddit Advanced Search: Every Operator, Date Filters and Tools (2026)
Every Reddit search operator, plus sorting and time filters, searching by date with Google, user history, deleted posts, finding subreddits, and a copy-paste query library.
Reddit search has a reputation for being bad. Most of that reputation comes from typing three words into the search bar and hoping. Reddit actually supports field operators, Boolean logic, per-community search, comment search and several sort and time filters. What it doesn't have is a date operator or a proper archive of deleted content, and that's where Google and third-party tools come in.
This is the complete reference: every operator Reddit documents, how the filters behave, how to search by exact date, how to dig through a user's history, what still works for finding deleted posts in 2026, how to find subreddits, and a library of queries you can copy for research, lead finding and feedback.
Quick answer: Reddit has no separate advanced search page. You type operators straight into the search bar: subreddit:, author:, title:, selftext:, flair:, self:true or self:false, site: and url:, plus exact phrases in quotes and uppercase AND, OR, NOT with parentheses. Put no space after the colon. Use the sort (Relevance, Hot, Top, New, Comment count) and the time filter (past hour to all time) to narrow results. For exact dates, search Google with site:reddit.com and its time tools or before: and after:, or use the Arctic Shift archive.
Where you can search on Reddit
Reddit's search covers five content types (Reddit Help: How does Reddit search work?):
| Tab | What it finds | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | Text, link, image and video posts | Most research, and the only tab where all the operators make sense |
| Communities | Subreddits | Finding where a topic is discussed |
| Comments | Individual comments | Recommendations and advice buried in threads |
| Media | Images, videos, GIFs | Visual content only |
| People | Redditors | Finding a specific account (not available inside a community) |
Three other places to search:
- Inside a community. Open a subreddit and use the search bar. The community name appears as a pill, and results stay inside it. Click Show results from all of Reddit to widen the scope.
- Inside a post. On desktop, use the search bar by the comments section. In the apps, tap the search icon on a post. Useful for 2,000-comment threads.
- AI search. Type a question and select Ask for an AI summary of relevant posts and comments with citations. It's good for "what does Reddit think about X", not for precise queries.
Every Reddit search operator
These are the filters Reddit documents on its Available search features page:
| Operator | Matches | Example |
|---|---|---|
subreddit: | The post's subreddit | subreddit:startups |
author: | The user who submitted the post | author:spez |
title: | The post title | title:"alternative to" |
selftext: | The body of a text post | selftext:"switched from" |
flair: | The post's link flair text | flair:Question |
self: | Text posts only (true) or link and media posts only (false) | self:true |
site: | The domain of a link post | site:github.com |
url: | Text in the submitted URL | url:pricing |
"quotes" | An exact phrase | "looking for a tool" |
AND | All terms must appear | crm AND spreadsheet |
OR | Any term can appear | crm OR "customer database" |
NOT | Exclude a term | crm NOT salesforce |
( ) | Group terms | crm NOT (salesforce OR hubspot) |
Old Reddit's search sidebar also lists self:yes and self:no, plus nsfw:yes and nsfw:no to include or exclude NSFW results.
The rules that make operators work
- No space after the colon.
author:redditworks.author: redditdoesn't. - Quote multi-word values.
title:"kitten gif", nottitle:kitten gif. - Boolean operators are case sensitive.
AND,ORandNOTmust be uppercase. Lowercase "and" is just a word. - Group when you mix operators. Reddit's own example:
hedgehog NOT sonic OR shadowreturns very different results fromhedgehog NOT (sonic OR shadow). When in doubt, add parentheses. - Post searches match loosely. Posts only need to contain some of your words unless you use quotes or field operators. Comment and people searches currently require all of your words.
- Operators describe posts. The fields are post fields (title, body, link, flair), so use them on the Posts tab.
Combining operators
You can stack several filters in one query:
subreddit:SaaS title:"alternative to" self:true
author:reddit subreddit:reddit "search updates"
site:github.com subreddit:selfhosted title:"I built"
flair:Question subreddit:smallbusiness (invoice OR invoicing)
If a complex query returns odd results, strip it back to one or two filters and add them back one at a time. Combining several field operators with Boolean groups isn't documented in detail, and it doesn't always behave the way you'd expect.
Sorting and time filters
After you search, you can sort posts five ways (Reddit Help: filters and sorts):
| Sort | What it does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance (default) | Weighs how rare your words are, post age, votes and comments | Most searches |
| Hot | Posts getting upvotes and comments right now | Trending topics |
| Top | Most upvoted and commented, filterable by time | The definitive threads on a topic |
| New | Newest first, regardless of votes | Fresh questions you can still answer |
| Comment count | Most comments first | Heavy discussions and debates |
The time filter narrows results to the past hour, 24 hours, week, month, year or all time. Comments can be sorted by Relevance, Top or New.
One detail matters: Relevance is the only sort that accounts for how rare your words are. With Top or New, a result matching only your most common word can rank first. If Top gives you noise, add quotes or title:.
How to search Reddit by date
Reddit has no date operator. The time filter is relative (past week, past year), so you can't ask for "March 2025" or "before the pricing change". Two ways around it:
Google with site:reddit.com
Google indexes Reddit well and gives you real date controls:
site:reddit.com "notion alternative"
site:reddit.com/r/startups "pricing page"
site:reddit.com "linear vs jira" after:2026-01-01
site:reddit.com "mailchimp" after:2025-03-01 before:2025-06-30
Then either open Tools and pick a time range (past hour to past year, or a custom range), or use the before: and after: operators that Google documents. Google says those operators filter by when a page was last updated, so an old thread that got a new comment can show up in a recent range. Check the post date when you open it.
Arctic Shift for exact ranges
Arctic Shift is a free Reddit archive with a search interface. You can filter posts and comments by subreddit, author and an exact date range, and search keywords in titles, bodies and comments. Its API documentation notes that keyword search needs an author or subreddit filter and isn't supported for very active users or subreddits. It comes with no uptime guarantee, and during our checks in September 2026 some API queries returned errors, so have Google as a fallback.
How to search a user's posts and comments
- Their profile. Open
reddit.com/user/usernameand switch between the Posts and Comments tabs. Sort by Top to see what the community valued. author:in search.author:username subreddit:SaaS pricingfinds their posts on a topic in one community.- Curated profiles. Since mid-2025, users can hide some or all of their activity from their profile. Reddit's help center says hidden posts and comments stay visible in their original communities and in search results on and off Reddit, so
author:searches and Google still find them. - Comment history by keyword. Reddit's search doesn't filter comments by author. Arctic Shift's comment search does: enter the username plus a keyword to search that user's comments.
For your own account, Reveddit shows which of your posts and comments were removed by moderators or filters, which Reddit doesn't always tell you.
How to find deleted or removed Reddit posts
"Deleted" and "removed" are different. A deleted post was taken down by its author. A removed post was taken down by moderators, filters or Reddit. Neither shows up in Reddit's own search. Archives can only show something if they captured it before it disappeared.
Here's what worked when we checked in September 2026:
| Tool | Status (Sept 2026) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Arctic Shift | Online and maintained (monthly data dumps through August 2026) | Searching archived posts and comments by subreddit, author and date |
| PullPush | Online, with strict rate limits and a browser check | Searching archived posts and comments |
| Reveddit | Online | Seeing what moderators removed from your own account |
| Wayback Machine | Online | Snapshots of specific thread URLs, if someone archived them |
| Pushshift | Restricted to Reddit moderators | Moderation work only |
| Unddit | Didn't load during our checks | Not recommended right now |
| redditsearch.io | Now redirects to a site selling Reddit upvotes | Avoid |
Arctic Shift collects content a second time about 36 hours after first archiving it and marks items that were deleted in between, which is why it can show you something that's gone from Reddit. Both Arctic Shift and PullPush accept removal requests, so content can also disappear from archives. Use these tools for research, not to expose people who deleted something for a reason.
How to find subreddits
- Communities tab. Search a topic and switch to Communities. Check member counts and recent activity before joining.
- Google.
site:reddit.com/r/ "your topic"surfaces communities where your topic actually comes up in threads, not just in a name. - Sidebars and related communities. Most subreddits link related ones in the sidebar. Following two or three of those usually finds the smaller, more active communities.
- Arctic Shift subreddit search. Search by name prefix and filter by subscriber count.

Save the queries that work. Rerunning the same five searches every morning, sorted by New, beats writing a clever new query each time.

When manual search stops scaling
Operators are great for one-off research. They get tedious when you need the same answers every day, because Reddit search doesn't send keyword alerts and the best threads get answered within hours.
For ongoing monitoring, compare the options in best Reddit search tools. Okara's Reddit Agent is one of them: it monitors your brand, competitor and category keywords, surfaces high-intent threads daily, summarizes each subreddit's rules, and drafts replies that you review and post from your own account. Nothing is posted automatically. It's part of AI CMO Pro at $249/month ($208/month billed annually). If you only search Reddit occasionally, the free methods in this guide are enough.
Common questions
Does Reddit have an advanced search page?
No. Reddit's advanced search is the set of operators you type into the normal search bar, such as subreddit:, author:, title: and selftext:, combined with the sort and time filters on the results page.
Can you search Reddit by date?
Not with an exact date. Reddit's time filter only offers relative ranges (past hour, day, week, month, year). For specific dates, use Google with site:reddit.com and after: or before:, or an archive like Arctic Shift.
How do I search only one subreddit?
Open the subreddit and use its search bar, or add subreddit:name to any search, for example subreddit:startups pricing.
Can I search Reddit comments?
Yes. Search, then switch to the Comments tab. Comment results must include all your search words. To search within one thread, use the search option on the post itself.
Why doesn't Reddit search find a post I know exists?
It may have been deleted or removed, it may be in a private or quarantined community, your Safe Search setting may be hiding it, or your query may be too loose. Try exact phrases in quotes, title:, or Google with site:reddit.com.
How can I see deleted Reddit posts?
Only through archives that captured the post before it was deleted. Arctic Shift and PullPush were working in September 2026. Pushshift is limited to moderators, and some older tools no longer work.
