Startup Directories List 2026: 50+ Sites to Submit Your Startup

A verified 2026 list of 50+ startup directories for backlinks, discovery and SEO, with costs, review times, a submission checklist and honest notes on which ones send real traffic.

Every new startup hits the same wall: Google does not know you exist yet, nobody links to you, and the few people searching for your category find your competitors first. Startup directories are one of the first places founders turn to fix that.

The problem is that most directory lists are years out of date. Sites have died, free submissions have become paid, and a lot of "directories" are link farms that add nothing. Submit to the wrong ones and you waste a weekend. Submit to spammy ones and you add links Google explicitly calls out as low quality.

This guide is about the long game: directories that give you a permanent listing, a relevant backlink, or a place in front of buyers comparing tools. Every site was checked in September 2026. We list costs and review times only where the site states them, and we mark do-follow links only where the site says so.

Quick answer: The startup directories worth submitting to in 2026 are the ones your buyers actually browse: G2 and Capterra-style review sites for B2B software, SaaSHub and AlternativeTo for "alternatives to" searches, There's An AI For That, Toolify and Future Tools for AI products, and DevHunt, StackShare and GitHub awesome lists for developer tools. Add a handful of general directories (Startup Fame, StartupBase, Startup Inspire) for early links. Skip bulk submission packages and low-quality directories; Google's spam policies name "low-quality directory or bookmark site links" as link spam.

How we compared: we checked each site's pricing or submission page and documentation in September 2026. Okara publishes this guide.

Directories vs launch sites: what you are actually getting

Launch sites give you a spike on one day. Directories give you a listing that sits there for years. That changes what matters:

  • Relevance beats volume. A listing on a site your buyers browse (a review site in your category, an AI directory for an AI product) is worth more than 50 generic listings.
  • Do-follow is not the whole story. A no-follow listing that sends buyers is better than a do-follow listing nobody visits.
  • Consistency matters. Your name, URL and description should match everywhere, so search engines and AI assistants see one clear entity.
  • Paid links carry risk. Google's guidance says paid links should be marked rel="sponsored" or nofollow. A directory that sells do-follow links is selling exactly what Google's spam policies describe, so treat paid "SEO backlink" packages with caution.

Domain rating (DR) figures below come from each directory's own site. They are self-reported, so use them as a rough signal only.

General startup directories

These accept most kinds of startups. Traffic is usually modest. Their main value is an early, relevant link and a listing that shows up when people search your brand name.

SaaS and software directories

These are built around comparisons. People arrive searching "alternatives to [competitor]" or "best [category] software", which makes them some of the few directories that send buyers, not just bots.

Review sites

Review sites are directories where the listing is only as good as your reviews. An empty profile does little. A profile with 20 honest reviews can rank for "[your category] software" and show up when buyers research you.

The practical move: claim G2 (free) and one Gartner Digital Markets profile, then ask your happiest customers for reviews. Do not buy reviews or offer rewards that break a site's rules.

AI tool directories

If you sell an AI product, these sites have genuine browsing traffic from people searching by task ("AI tool for transcribing podcasts"). Most have moved to paid listings.

Developer tool directories and lists

Developers distrust ads and trust lists made by other developers. These are the places where a listing actually gets clicked.

Regional startup directories and databases

If you raise money or sell in a specific region, these databases matter more than global ones. Investors and local press often use them to research companies.

Launch boards that leave a permanent listing

Some launch platforms double as directories because your launch page stays up after the day ends. These are the ones that state their link terms clearly.

Be realistic before you spend a weekend on submissions:

  • Review sites and SaaS comparison sites send buyer traffic in established B2B categories, because people use them mid-purchase. They need reviews to work.
  • AI tool directories send browsing traffic for AI products. It is often curious rather than ready to buy, so measure signups, not visits.
  • Developer lists (awesome lists, StackShare, DevHunt) send small but high-intent traffic from developers who clicked on purpose.
  • General startup directories mostly give you a link and a branded search result. Some send a trickle of visitors, mainly other founders.
  • Regional databases rarely send traffic. They matter because investors, journalists and partners look you up there.
  • Bulk submission services that promise 100+ directories mostly produce low-quality links. That is the exact pattern Google's spam policies describe.

If your goal is rankings, directory links are a small starting boost. The links that move rankings come from content people cite, guest posts, data, tools and PR. Our guide on how to build backlinks for a startup covers those.

Submission checklist

Prepare everything once in a single doc, then copy from it. This keeps every listing consistent and cuts each submission to a few minutes.

Assets to prepare

  • Product name, written exactly the same way everywhere
  • Canonical URL (pick www or non-www and stick to it)
  • One-line tagline, under 60 characters
  • Short description (about 150 characters) and long description (about 150 words)
  • Category and 3 to 5 tags
  • Pricing model (free, freemium, paid) and starting price
  • Square logo (PNG, at least 512 x 512) and a wide banner
  • 3 to 5 screenshots and a short demo video or GIF
  • Founder name, contact email and company location
  • Social links (X, LinkedIn, GitHub if relevant)
  • Two or three direct competitors (SaaSHub and AlternativeTo use these)

Consistency rules

  • Same name, URL, description and logo on every directory
  • Same company details (name, location, contact email) across directories and your site, the way local businesses keep name, address and phone consistent
  • Update listings when your pricing or positioning changes

Tracking

  • Tag each directory link with UTM parameters (utm_source=saashub, utm_medium=directory, utm_campaign=listings-2026). Our free UTM builder generates these
  • Log each submission in a sheet: site, date, cost, status, live URL, link type
  • Check in 30 and 90 days: which directories sent sessions and signups in your analytics
  • Drop paid renewals that sent nothing

Before you pay

  • Does the audience match your buyer?
  • Is the review time acceptable for your plans?
  • Does the site require a backlink or badge on your homepage? Decide if you are comfortable with that
  • Is the paid "backlink" marked sponsored or nofollow? If not, understand the risk

A realistic submission plan

Week 1: G2 free profile, SaaSHub, AlternativeTo, one Gartner Digital Markets profile, Wellfound and Crunchbase. These are the listings people look you up on.

Week 2: Category-specific directories: AI directories if you are an AI product, developer lists if you sell to developers, SoftwareSuggest or SaaSworthy for B2B software.

Week 3: Three to five general directories with clear terms (Startup Fame, StartupBase, Startup Inspire, 10words). Start long free queues (Uneed, DevHunt, Open Launch) now if you want them later.

Ongoing: Ask customers for reviews on the one or two review sites that matter in your category. Update listings every quarter.

For more on how launches and directories fit together, the Okara launch library shows how software companies announced their products on X.

Where Okara fits

Directories are a one-time job. The ongoing work is finding link opportunities that actually matter: relevant publications, resource pages, roundups and partners in your niche.

Okara's Backlink Agent, included in AI CMO Pro ($249/mo, or $208/mo billed annually), surfaces relevant link opportunities and suggests outreach angles for each. Pro also includes the SEO and GEO agents, and the Coding Agent can open GitHub pull requests for technical SEO fixes. See Okara pricing for the full plan comparison.

What it does not do: it does not submit your product to directories for you, and it cannot guarantee links or rankings. You still decide which opportunities to pursue and send the outreach.

Common questions

Are startup directories still worth it in 2026?

A few are. Review sites, SaaS comparison sites and category-specific directories (AI, developer tools) can send real buyers. Most general directories only give you a link and a branded search result, so spend an afternoon on them, not a month.

Do startup directories help SEO?

A handful of relevant listings helps a brand-new site get discovered and gives search engines consistent information about your company. Large numbers of low-quality directory links do not help and can count as link spam under Google's policies.

How many directories should I submit to?

Start with 10 to 20 that match your audience. Quality and relevance matter far more than count.

Are paid directory listings worth it?

Only when the directory's audience matches your buyers and you can measure the result. Paying purely for a do-follow link is risky, because Google expects paid links to be marked sponsored or nofollow.

What is the difference between a startup directory and a launch platform?

A launch platform gives you a dated launch and a leaderboard for a day or a week. A directory gives you a permanent listing that people find later through search. Several sites now do both.

Which directories are best for AI startups?

Toolify, TopAI.tools and Dang.ai state their prices and review times clearly, Future Tools is free to submit, and There's An AI For That runs a paid launch format. Pick two or three rather than paying for all of them.
