# Brand Voice

"Friendly but professional" isn't a voice — it's a wish. A usable brand voice is
a small set of defined attributes with rules and examples that anyone, human or
agent, can write from and produce copy that sounds like one company.

About this skill

What is the Brand Voice?

The Brand Voice skill is the instruction set Okara’s Writer Agent uses to define a brand’s voice and then hold every piece of writing to it. It turns fuzzy adjectives like "friendly but professional" into a documented set of voice attributes, tone rules, vocabulary, and before/after examples — so anyone, or any agent, can produce copy that sounds like one company.

It’s written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that both people and AI agents can follow directly. Read it to understand the method, adapt it for your brand, or let the Writer Agent build the guide from a few samples and then apply it to any draft.

Downloading the instructions is free with an Okara account. Building your voice guide and applying it across everything you write is part of the Writer Agent.

Voice drifts fastest at the exact moment a company can least afford it: right as headcount grows past the size where one person reviews every sentence, and right as more of that writing starts coming from freelancers, contractors, and AI tools with no shared reference. Without a documented set of attributes and do/don’t examples, each new writer fills the gap with their own instincts, and six sensible individual choices add up to a company that sounds like six different companies rather than one.

Example

See it in action

You ask: Our brand voice should be "friendly but professional." Can you make that usable?

Agent does: "Friendly but professional" is a start, but it’s too vague to write from. I’d turn it into three concrete attributes — say Warm, Clear, and Confident — each with a one-line definition, a "we do / we don’t" pair, and a rewritten example. For Clear: we do "Your invoice is ready," we don’t "Please be advised that your invoicing document has been generated." I’d add a short word list (use "help," avoid "leverage") and a tone-shift note for support vs. marketing. Then anything written against this guide sounds like you. Want me to draft the full guide from a few samples of your existing copy?
