# Hook Generator

The first line decides whether anything else gets read. Hooks aren't magic
phrases; they're a small set of patterns loaded with something specific. This
skill picks the pattern deliberately and writes several so you can choose.

About this skill

What is the Hooks?

The Hooks skill is the exact approach Okara’s Writer Agent follows to write first lines that earn the second line. It treats hooks as a small set of named patterns — contradiction, specific result, open loop, confession, stakes — loaded with something concrete, rather than as a search for a magic phrase.

It’s written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Use it to fix a strong piece with a weak opener, or to generate the ten variations you need before picking one.

Downloading the instructions is free with an Okara account. Running the skill on everything you publish — hooks generated, tested, and learned from — is part of the Writer Agent.

Example

See it in action

You ask: My post about our onboarding redesign gets impressions but nobody reads it. It opens with "I’ve been thinking about onboarding lately."

Agent does: It deletes the throat-clearing first — everything before the interesting part goes — then finds the most surprising true thing buried in paragraph four: you removed a step and activation went up. That becomes the specific-result hook. It writes ten more across contradiction, open loop, confession, and stakes patterns, each loaded with a real number rather than a vague claim, and names the pattern behind each so you can reuse what works. Two get recommended with reasoning. Then it checks the body actually delivers what the winning hook promises, because a hook that overpromises costs you the next post’s reach.

How it works

From input to output

  1. 1

    You bring the piece

Share the post, article, or core idea, plus where it is publishing.

  2. 2

    Okara finds the surprising thing

The Writer Agent locates the most surprising true detail in the piece — usually buried several paragraphs down.

  3. 3

    It writes ten across patterns

Variations spanning contradiction, specific result, open loop, confession, and stakes, each loaded with a real specific.

  4. 4

You pick, it checks the payoff

Two recommendations with reasoning, plus a check that the body delivers what the hook promises.

What's included

Everything it covers

  • Surprising-thing extraction

Finds the detail worth leading with, usually buried well below the current opening.

  • Named patterns

Contradiction, specific result, open loop, confession, stakes — chosen deliberately, not guessed.

  • Specificity loading

Puts a number, name, date, or dollar amount into the line instead of a vague claim.

  • Ten variations

Volume across multiple patterns, because hooks are cheap to write and expensive to get wrong.

  • Payoff verification

Checks the piece delivers what the hook promised, so curiosity does not burn the audience.

  • Platform fit

Adjusts length and formatting for X compression, the LinkedIn fold, or headline constraints.

Use cases

When to reach for it

  • Fix a strong piece that nobody reads past the first line.
  • Generate ten opener variations to test on one post.
  • Break the habit of starting every post the same way.
  • Rewrite headlines that describe instead of hook.
  • Find the buried detail in a draft that should have been the opener.
