# Newsletter

A newsletter competes with every other unread email, not with other
newsletters. This skill writes an issue that survives the inbox: a subject line
worth opening, a lead that pays off immediately, and a single ask at the end.

About this skill

What is the Newsletter?

The Newsletter skill is the exact approach Okara’s Writer Agent follows to write an issue that performs in a crowded inbox. It covers the subject line and preview text as a pair, the two-sentence payoff that stops the scroll, a scannable section structure, and the single call to action that everything else supports.

It’s written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Read it to fix a format that has gone stale, hand it to a writer, or let the Writer Agent draft each issue for you.

Downloading the instructions is free with an Okara account. Running the skill on a real cadence — a drafted issue waiting for you every week, in your voice — is part of the Writer Agent.

Example

See it in action

You ask: Write this week’s newsletter about our new pricing — open rates have been sliding.

Agent does: It picks one center of gravity (the price cut, not the six features shipped alongside it), then writes three subject lines with the specific number in them and a preview text that continues rather than repeats. The lead pays off in two sentences — what changed, what it costs now — before any context. Sections get real subheads so the value survives a scan, the housekeeping drops to the footer, and the issue ends with exactly one link plus a reply prompt asking which plan they’re on, because replies are the deliverability signal that pulls the next issue back up.

How it works

From input to output

  1. 1

    You give it the update

Share what this issue is about, who is on the list, and the one action you want them to take.

  2. 2

    Okara finds the one thing

The Writer Agent picks a single center of gravity and builds the subject line and preview text around it.

  3. 3

    It writes for the scan

You get a two-sentence payoff up top, scannable sections with real subheads, and one CTA at the end.

  4. 4

    You send and earn replies

A specific reply prompt closes the issue, which lifts both engagement and deliverability for the next send.

What's included

Everything it covers

  • Subject line options

Three tested angles, best first, with the reasoning behind each one.

  • Preview text pairing

Writes the preview line as a second headline instead of wasting it on boilerplate.

  • Two-sentence payoff

Leads with the insight or number so the open is rewarded before any context.

  • One-to-one voice

Writes as one person to one reader, not as a brand to a segment.

  • Single CTA

One action per issue, because two calls to action halve each other.

  • Cadence structure

A repeatable format that survives past issue three without going stale.

Use cases

When to reach for it

  • Fix a newsletter whose open rate has been sliding for months.
  • Launch a newsletter with a format that scales beyond the first few issues.
  • Turn a product update into an issue people actually finish.
  • Get replies and clicks instead of silent non-unsubscribes.
  • Keep a weekly cadence without a weekly writing block.
