The Best AI SEO Agents in 2026, Scored by What They Actually Execute

Can an AI SEO agent replace an agency? Learn what AI can automate, its limits, top tools, and if it's worth it for startups.

Part of our AI SEO guide.

"AI SEO agent" now appears on everything from a GPT wrapper that writes blog posts to platforms that change your live site. That makes most comparisons useless, because they rank tools on features without asking the one question that matters: how much of the SEO work does this thing actually finish without you?

We make an SEO agent (Okara's), so this guide sets out the scoring rules first and applies them to every tool, ours included.

What an AI SEO agent is (and isn't)

An AI SEO agent is software that takes an SEO goal, pulls real data (Search Console, your site, the SERP), decides what to do next, does it, and checks the result. The loop is what separates it from the alternatives:

  • An SEO tool (Ahrefs, Semrush) gives you data. You decide and act.
  • An AI writer gives you a draft. You decide what to write about, publish it and fix it.
  • An AI SEO agent picks the task, does the task, and brings it back for approval or ships it.

You still decide your positioning, which pages matter commercially, and what your brand won't publish. An agent that promises to "handle SEO" with no input from you is either doing very little or doing things you'll regret.

How we scored them: 7 stages of the SEO loop

We checked each tool against seven stages and marked each one ● (does it), ◐ (partly or with setup), or ○ (doesn't).

  1. Research: finds keyword and content gaps from real data.
  2. Plan: turns the research into a prioritized queue, not a 500-row export.
  3. Create: drafts new content or rewrites.
  4. Technical fixes: finds and prepares fixes for titles, metas, schema, internal links, redirects, indexing.
  5. Deploy: gets changes live (CMS publishing, code changes, or on-page injection).
  6. Monitor and recover: watches rankings and decay, then acts on drops.
  7. AI search visibility: tracks and improves mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews.

A dot means the vendor documents the capability, based on each product's public pages and documentation in September 2026. It says nothing about how good the output is, which is what the 14-day test further down is for.

How the list is ordered. By fit for founders and small teams with a codebase, not by counting dots. On dots alone, Search Atlas covers the most of the loop, and it's the right pick for many teams (see #2). We put Okara first because it's the one built for that founder profile, and because we make it, we've been specific about where it's weaker.

1. Okara: best for founders who want SEO fixes shipped as code, plus content and AI search in one place

Okara's SEO Agent connects to Google Search Console, runs daily technical audits, finds keyword and content gaps, and suggests about two ready-to-ship fixes a day. It doesn't stop at a report. The Coding Agent turns technical SEO and GEO fixes into GitHub pull requests you can review and merge, so changes live in your codebase instead of a script injected on top of it. The GEO Agent tracks up to 15 prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, and on the Pro plan the Writer Agent drafts articles from the same strategy and publishes approved ones to WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Wix or Sanity.

Where it's strongest

  • Sites built by developers or on modern stacks (Next.js, Framer, Webflow), where a pull request is the right way to change things.
  • Teams that want SEO, AI-search visibility and content driven by one plan instead of three tools.

Where it's weaker

  • It's not a keyword database. If you need backlink indexes and keyword volumes across millions of terms, keep Ahrefs or Semrush for research.
  • Rank monitoring is lighter than Search Atlas or Nightwatch.
  • The Writer Agent is on Pro ($249/month).

Pricing: free plan (site analysis and strategy). Lite $129/month ($108 annually) includes the SEO, GEO and Coding agents. Pro $249/month ($208 annually) adds the Writer Agent. See the SEO Agent.

2. Search Atlas (OTTO): best all-rounder for agencies and SEO-heavy teams

Search Atlas covers the most of the loop in one platform. OTTO deploys on-page and technical fixes through a pixel (a JavaScript snippet) on your site, Content Genius handles content, rank tracking and local SEO are built in, and the Growth plan adds AI visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, plus Google and Meta ad studios.

  • Pick it if you manage several sites, or SEO and paid search are your main channels.
  • Watch out for how the fixes are delivered. Injected JavaScript changes what Google renders, not your source code. It works, but if you remove the script, the fixes disappear, and some teams don't want a third party rewriting their pages at render time.

Pricing: Starter $79/month, Growth $159/month, Pro $319/month. OTTO is included in the plans.

3. Frase: best for an end-to-end content pipeline

Frase has moved from content briefs to a full content agent: research, briefs, writing, SEO and GEO scoring in one editor, CMS publishing, and "Content Guard", which watches published pages for decay and prepares refreshes. It also has a read-write MCP server, so you can drive it from Claude or other agents.

  • Pick it if content is your SEO strategy and you want the whole write-publish-refresh loop in one tool.
  • Skip it if your problems are technical (indexing, internal links, schema). Frase doesn't fix your site.

Pricing: Starter $39/month billed yearly.

4. Alli AI: best for pushing technical changes to sites you can't easily edit

Alli AI deploys on-page and technical changes across a whole site through its script, without developer access. That's the point: agencies with client sites on locked-down CMSs can change titles, metas, schema and internal links in bulk.

  • Pick it if you manage many sites and can't get developer time.
  • Skip it if you're a single startup with a codebase. Pull-request-based fixes are cleaner, and Alli's pricing is built for agencies.

Pricing: from $249/month billed annually ($299 monthly). 10-day trial.

5. SEObot: best for founders who just want articles published every week

SEObot researches your site, audience and keywords, then writes and publishes articles on a schedule. Its founder built it for his own portfolio of SaaS products and directories. It's the simplest option here: enter a URL and articles start appearing.

  • Pick it if you want consistent content with almost no involvement, and your site's technical SEO is already sound.
  • Skip it if you care about technical fixes or AI-search visibility, or you worry about publishing at volume without editorial review (see "The risk nobody mentions" below).

Pricing: from $49/month, with a refund on the $49 plan after the first article if you're unhappy.

6. AirOps: best for content teams at larger companies

AirOps combines AI-visibility analytics with content workflows, human review gates, brand governance and bulk CMS publishing. It's built for teams producing and refreshing content at scale with approvals.

  • Pick it if you have a content team and need governance across many writers and pages.
  • Skip it if you're a small team. The value is in the workflow controls, which you won't use.

Pricing: Solo is about $199/month after a 14-day free trial (100 tracked prompts, 20,000 tasks). Larger plans go through sales.

7. Ahrefs Agent A: best if your team already runs on Ahrefs data

Agent A is Ahrefs' marketing agent, with direct access to the same data and endpoints as the Ahrefs interface, plus a library of prebuilt skills (audits, briefs, refreshes, reports). It runs on Letaido, Ahrefs' agent platform.

  • Pick it if you already pay for Ahrefs and want its data turned into finished work instead of exports.
  • Skip it if you're not an Ahrefs customer. The data advantage is the reason to choose it.

Pricing: through your Ahrefs and Letaido workspace. Check current plans.

8. Surfer: best for optimizing individual pages

Surfer is still the go-to content optimization editor, with AI writing and newer AI-visibility features. It improves the pages you point it at. It doesn't decide what to work on or change your site.

  • Pick it if writers on your team want a score to write against.
  • Skip it if you want an agent that runs the loop.

9. Nightwatch (NightOwl): best for monitoring

NightOwl is Nightwatch's agent on top of its rank tracking. It watches rankings and AI visibility and explains what changed. It recommends rather than executes.

  • Pick it if rank and visibility monitoring is the gap and your team does the fixing.

10. sunbeam by daydream: the most autonomous, if you can get in

sunbeam watches your site and search data, decides what to fix, and opens GitHub pull requests with its reasoning, without waiting for a prompt. It's in private beta, so it goes last on this list despite the ambition.

Agents are strongest at the repetitive, steady work that agencies bill for and founders drop: audits, meta fixes, internal links, refreshes, the next brief. Agencies still earn their fee on link building, digital PR and strategy for competitive markets. Many seed-stage teams get the best result from an agent for execution plus a few hours of expert review a quarter. More in SEO agency alternatives and what SEO agencies cost.

The risk nobody mentions: scaled content

Google's spam policies target "scaled content abuse": publishing large amounts of unoriginal content mainly to manipulate rankings, whether a human or AI wrote it. An agent that publishes 30 generic articles a month without review can hurt your whole site, not just the new pages. Keep three rules:

  1. Review before publishing. Use agents that draft for approval, or at least let you turn auto-publish off.
  2. Give it something only you know. Product data, customer quotes, screenshots, your pricing, your opinions. Otherwise it writes the same article as everyone else's agent.
  3. Fix before you add. A site with 40 decent pages and clean technical SEO usually gains more from fixes and refreshes than from 40 new posts.

How to test an AI SEO agent in 14 days

  1. Day 1: Connect Search Console and your CMS or repo. Note how long setup takes.
  2. Days 2–4: Read the first audit. Are the top 10 issues real and ordered by impact, or is it a generic checklist?
  3. Days 5–7: Approve 5 fixes and 1 content piece. Check what actually changed on the live page (view-source, and URL Inspection in Search Console).
  4. Days 8–14: Watch for anything that broke (canonicals, redirects, layout) and whether the agent notices and responds to changes in Search Console.
  5. Decide: Count the useful, correct actions per hour of your review time. That number is the product.

FAQ

What is the best AI SEO agent? It depends on what you need finished. For startups that want technical fixes shipped as pull requests alongside content and AI-search tracking, Okara. For agencies and SEO-heavy teams, Search Atlas. For a content-only pipeline, Frase.

Can an AI SEO agent replace an SEO agency? For audits, on-page fixes, internal links, refreshes and steady content, mostly yes. For link building, digital PR and senior strategy in competitive markets, not yet.

Are AI SEO agents safe to use? They are if you review what they ship. Prefer agents that draft for approval or open pull requests. Be careful with fully automatic publishing and with script-based changes you can't easily audit.

How much does an AI SEO agent cost? Between $39 and about $320 a month for the self-serve options here. Enterprise tools like AirOps' paid tiers are quote-based.

What's the difference between an AI SEO agent and an AI SEO tool? A tool gives you data or a draft. An agent chooses the next task from your data, does it, and brings back the result. Okara's SEO Agent page shows the difference in practice.

Okara publishes this comparison and makes one of the agents in it. Other products' details come from their public product and pricing pages, checked September 24, 2026.
