About this skill

What is the Content Gap?

The Content Gap skill is the methodology Okara’s SEO Agent uses to compare your coverage against competitors and surface the demand they capture and you miss, so your content plan is driven by real opportunity instead of guesswork.

It’s written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Read it to understand how gaps are found, clustered, and qualified, adapt it for your own team, or let the SEO Agent run the analysis against your competitors.

Downloading the instructions is free with an Okara account. Running it continuously, with gaps re-analyzed as competitors publish and turned into a live content backlog, is part of the SEO Agent.

That’s also why gap analysis can’t be a single pass. Ahrefs’ research into page-one rankings found the average #1 result is now about 5 years old, up from roughly 2 years in 2017, and that nearly 73% of page-one pages are more than 3 years old — competitors aren’t standing still, they’re quietly reinforcing the pages that already rank. Re-run this analysis quarterly, because the gaps you closed last quarter are exactly the ones competitors are now deepening.

Example

See it in action

You ask: Two competitors keep out-ranking us in our space. What are they covering that we aren’t?

Agent does: Across your two competitors, there are 60-plus keywords they rank for that you don’t — but they cluster into just four topics, and one of them is high commercial intent. You already rank on page two for eight of those terms, so those are your fastest wins: strengthen the existing pages rather than build new ones. Then build out the high-intent cluster as a set, not scattered posts. I’d skip the two low-value informational clusters for now.

How it works

From input to output

  1. 1

    You provide your competitors

Share your domain and two to five competitor domains. Optionally add a seed keyword list.

  2. 2

    Okara compares ranking sets

The SEO Agent pulls the keywords each competitor ranks for and maps them against where you already appear.

  3. 3

It finds and clusters the gaps

Missing keywords, weak pages, and page-two near-misses are grouped into topics and scored by value and difficulty.

  4. 4

    You get a prioritized plan

Each gap comes with an action — create or improve — and the target query and page, ordered by impact.

What's included

Everything it covers

  • Competitor benchmarking

Compares your keyword coverage against the sites that actually rank for your money terms.

  • Keyword gap discovery

Finds terms competitors rank for that you don’t, plus your own page-two near-misses.

  • Weak-page detection

Flags existing pages that under-rank and are better improved than replaced.

  • Gap qualification

Scores each gap by intent, business value, volume, and difficulty to win.

  • Near-miss opportunities

Surfaces the page-two rankings a small push can move onto page one fastest.

  • Prioritized content plan

Turns gaps into a topic-clustered backlog with a create-or-improve action for each.

Use cases

When to reach for it

  • See exactly where competitors out-rank you and why.
  • Refill a content pipeline with data-backed, high-value topics.
  • Prioritize page-two near-misses that are quickest to convert.
  • Map the full competitive landscape before entering a new market.
  • Decide, gap by gap, whether to write new pages or improve old ones.
