About this skill

What is the Topical Map?

The Topical Map skill is the methodology Okara’s SEO Agent uses to turn a subject into a structured plan of pillars and clusters, so a site earns topical authority instead of publishing disconnected posts that never compound.

It’s written as a SKILL.md, a plain-language instruction format that people and AI agents can both follow. Read it to understand how a subject is decomposed into hubs, spokes, intent, and internal links, adapt it for your own editorial team, or let the SEO Agent build the map for you.

Downloading the instructions is free with an Okara account. Running them continuously, with the map maintained and expanded as you rank, is part of the SEO Agent.

That compounding effect isn’t instant, and it isn’t something you bank once. Ahrefs’ research into page-one rankings found the average #1 result is now about 5 years old, up from roughly 2 years in 2017, and that nearly 73% of page-one pages are more than 3 years old — topical authority is built the same way, by finishing and then continuing to reinforce a cluster over years, not by publishing a pillar page and moving on to the next subject.

Example

See it in action

You ask: We publish two blog posts a week but never build any authority. How do we plan content that actually ranks?

Agent does: You’re publishing scattered posts with no structure, so nothing reinforces anything else. Pick one pillar tied to what you sell, then map every subtopic a buyer moves through from awareness to decision. Cluster those into one hub with supporting pages that all link back to it. Finish that cluster completely before starting a second — full coverage of one topic beats thin coverage of five, and it’s what earns topical authority.

How it works

From input to output

  1. 1

    You provide your subject

Share the core topic or the products and services you sell. Optionally add competitors and seed keywords.

  2. 2

    Okara decomposes the topic

The SEO Agent breaks the subject into every meaningful subtopic real buyers care about, from awareness to decision.

  3. 3

    It structures pillars and clusters

Subtopics are grouped into hubs and spokes, each labeled by intent, content type, and priority.

  4. 4

You get a linked, sequenced map

The map shows which pages to build, in what order, and how they should link together to concentrate authority.

What's included

Everything it covers

  • Subject decomposition

Breaks a topic into every subtopic real users care about across the full journey.

  • Pillar and cluster structure

Groups subtopics into hubs and supporting pages so coverage is complete and coherent.

  • Intent and content-type mapping

Labels each node by search intent and the format that ranks for it.

  • Internal-link planning

Defines how spokes link to pillars and siblings so authority concentrates where it counts.

  • Coverage-gap detection

Surfaces the subtopics you’re missing that competitors use to own the subject.

  • Prioritized build order

Sequences the map by business value and by which pages unlock others.

Use cases

When to reach for it

  • Turn a vague content plan into a structured map that builds authority.
  • Plan a new subject area end to end before writing a word.
  • See exactly which subtopics you’re missing versus competitors.
  • Give writers a clear, prioritized brief instead of a keyword dump.
  • Sequence a content roadmap so each cluster compounds the last.
